Five days after the abduction of the 20 medical students of the University of Maiduguri and the University of Jos, security operatives are still combing the forest to rescue the students.
The medical students were last Thursday travelling for the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students annual convention in Enugu when they were reportedly kidnapped along the Otukpo/Otukpa/Enugu federal highway.
Consequently, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, had deployed a tactical team to ensure that the abducted students are rescued.
The IG team arrived in Benue State on Monday.
The team members were promptly deployed in Otukpo in a bid to rescue the abducted medical students.
The spokesperson for the state command, Catherine Anene said on Tuesday that the State Commissioner of Police, Hassan Yabanet, led the team to Otukpo.
“The IG team arrived on (Monday) and were promptly led by the Commissioner of Police to Otukpo; so the team and the CP are in Otukpo now,” the PPRO said.
Meanwhile, the Secretary General of Medical Students Association, Abwa Lawrence, who spoke on the phone to our correspondent on Tuesday,h said that the state government had assured them that the abducted students would be rescued.
He said, “The president of our association paid a courtesy visit to the deputy governor of Benue State yesterday (Monday) and he assured us that the government is doing everything possible to ensure the rescue of our colleagues.”
