The Palace Chiefs of the Benin Kingdom have condemned recent actions and comments that undermine the Benin traditional institution.
The Benin Traditional Council, in a statement, responded to reports that Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, planned to mediate a dispute involving two suspended Enigie and His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, the Oba of Benin.
Additionally, the Council addressed claims by the Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Mr. Chris Nehikhare, that the lawsuit filed by the Enigie was a family matter within the Benin Royal Family.
The chiefs reaffirmed the well-established and functional customary arbitration process overseen by the Oba of Benin.
They emphasized that any aggrieved traditional chief should utilize this process, deeming any external interference as abominable.
The statement highlighted the Oba’s role as the spiritual and royal leader of all Benin people, asserting that suggesting a dispute between the Oba and his subjects, including royal family members, was unacceptable.
The Council urged the public to be vigilant against attempts to destabilize the Benin Traditional Institution and called for continued peace and lawfulness within the kingdom.
