Bayelsa Police debunk viral claim of four girls found dead in Akenfa building

The Bayelsa State Police Command has dismissed as false and misleading a social media report claiming that four girls were discovered dead in an uncompleted building in Akenfa, Yenagoa.

In an official statement released on Tuesday, the command categorically denied the incident, stating that no such deaths occurred and no reports of any fatalities were received at the Akenfa Police Station or anywhere in the Yenagoa metropolis.

The police, however, confirmed the arrest of a suspected ritualist on Monday, January 19, 2026, at around 3:30 p.m. Operatives from the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Unit responded to a distress call and apprehended one Ogbe Joseph (male) inside an underground apartment believed to be a shrine, located within an uncompleted storey building in Akenfa Community, Yenagoa.

According to the statement, the suspect was arrested for allegedly attempting to use a 49-year-old man (name withheld) for suspected ritual purposes.

The victim, who appeared drugged and weakened, was rescued alive and immediately taken to a hospital, where he is currently receiving medical treatment. Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
