The Bayelsa State Environmental Sanitation Authority, led by Chairman, High Chief Timothy Diekivie Itiedu, conducted a robust enforcement and sensitisation campaign across Yenagoa’s major markets and areas during the July monthly sanitation exercise, targeting non-compliance with environmental regulations.

At Kpansia Market, High Chief Timothy expressed strong disapproval of businesses operating during the 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. sanitation window.

He emphasised that violators would face arrest and prosecution under state environmental laws, highlighting traders’ persistent failure to clean their surroundings, which contributes to drainage blockages.

“We will impose severe penalties on defaulters,” he stressed.

The Authority further noted concerns over illegal roadside structures, roadside vending, and encroachment on green lines, which exacerbate littering and traffic congestion.

Traders at Kpansia Market Extension were urged to strictly adhere to waste disposal guidelines and avoid indiscriminate dumping, with the Chairman commending efforts to maintain cleanliness but warning against lapses.

A key issue raised was the use of condemned tyres for goat roasting at Kpansia’s mini-abattoir, prompting immediate arrests and forthcoming prosecutions.

While inspecting the Oxbow-Lake and Swali areas, High Chief Timothy condemned footballers flouting the no-play directive during sanitation hours, adding that arrests would follow if violations persist.

At Swali Market, the team commended high compliance levels but highlighted concerns over traders dumping waste into gutters. The Chairman ordered the apprehension and prosecution of offenders to reinforce accountability.

The Authority reported over 50 arrests across Yenagoa for offenses, including littering from vehicles and loitering during sanitation hours, with offenders arraigned before the Environmental Sanitation Court to serve as a deterrent.

To bolster waste management, the Authority announced plans to install public receptacles at Obogoro-Famgbe Junction and Akaba Four Road Junction, a move High Chief Timothy noted would enhance residents’ access to proper disposal options.

The enforcement team included Permanent Secretary Dr. Ifiemi Ikoko, board members, directors, health officers, NESREA representatives, and NGOs, all of whom were commended for their coordinated efforts.
