Bayelsa State Deputy Governor Dr. Peter Akpe has cautioned Nigeria’s political class against overambitious and unnecessary competition in the pursuit of leadership positions.
Dr. Akpe gave the advice during a special thanksgiving service held in his honour to mark his 55th birthday at the Province 1 headquarters of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Higher Ground Parish, in Yenagoa.
Accompanied by his wife, Dr. Favour Akpe, and other family members, Dr Akpe attributed his elevation to the position of Deputy Governor to the outworking of God’s mercy and grace upon his life.
He noted that while ambition is natural, excessive ambition often leads people into actions contrary to divine plans. He therefore called on those in governance, church leadership and families to trust the Almighty who sees and knows everything.
“To all of us, I just want to encourage those in governance, the church leadership and families to hold on to God. He will direct your path. Let’s not be overambitious or engage in unnecessary competitiveness. If we live our lives that way, even if you get that thing, God may leave you alone to work it,” he said.
In a sermon titled “The Weapon of Gratitude,” Pastor Emmanuel Okolo of RCCG Youth Province 10, Port Harcourt, preached from Luke 17:11-19, describing gratitude as one of the greatest weapons available to God’s children.
He stressed that thanksgiving makes healing, deliverance and breakthroughs permanent.
Special prayers were offered for Dr. Akpe and his family by the Senior Pastor in charge of RCCG Region 27, Pastor Simon Folasayo.
Goodwill messages were delivered on behalf of the Akpe Family by Dr. Anthony Akpe, the Church by Pastor Leonard Ejiegbu, the Ebedebiri Community by Professor ThankGod Apere, and the Bayelsa State Government by Dr. Jones Ebieri.
Earlier on Tuesday, friends of the Deputy Governor organised a novelty football match between the Comrades Family and the Disciples of Akpe at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex in Ovom, Yenagoa, to mark the occasion.
