Barricades in the Capital: “No cause for alarm”, Security agencies say as Abuja gridlocks over protest surge

Abuja woke up to barricades, checkpoints, and gridlock on Thursday. Security agencies say it’s routine. Residents say it’s unnerving.

Strategic barricades have appeared across Abuja’s city centre in recent days, choking traffic and delaying thousands of motorists, civil servants and workers heading to offices in the FCT.

The visible show of force came as protests surge in the Federal Capital Territory, prompting a joint deployment of security and intelligence agencies.

—“It is a Joint Operation. No Cause for Alarm” – Police–

Addressing concerns at a joint media briefing, CSP Anietie Iniedu, Force Public Relations Officer, said there was no security threat to warrant panic.

“It is a joint operation. There is no cause for alarm at the moment,” Iniedu said.

He explained that the spike in security was a direct response to an “upsurge of protests in the city centre.”

“We’re trying to maintain law and order as is our basic and primary responsibility. The deployments are basically deployments with movement from one location to the other to ensure that our city centre is safe,” he said.

Iniedu stressed the capital’s unique status. Abuja hosts diplomatic missions, government institutions and foreign investors.

“Remember, we’re in the capital, and there’s a lot that has to be done to ensure confidence in those in the city centre and also for our foreign investors,” he added.

—From Intelligence-Led to ‘Community Collaborative’ Policing—

The police spokesperson said the NPF had expanded its strategy to what he called “intelligence-led community collaborative policing.”

“We’ve seen that intelligence alone won’t help us. We have gone far to create collaborative processes with our communities,” Iniedu stated.

—‘We Are Evolving With Them’ – NFIU—

Kingsley Amako of the National Coordination Office, Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit, said agencies were also tracking terror financing.

“We have very robust intelligence-gathering mechanisms. As they are evolving into new tricks and changing their tactics, we are also evolving with them,” Amako said.

He noted that some operations could not be disclosed publicly, but urged the media to seek clarification directly from security institutions.

For now, Abuja will move slowly behind barricades. Security agencies insist the deployment is preventive, not reactive. For commuters stuck in traffic, the explanation may matter less than the delay.
