Bandits have abducted 24 farmers, including pregnant women, on a rice farm in Palaita community, Erena Ward, Shiroro Local Government Area.
The attack reportedly occurred around 2:00 pm on Wednesday, while residents were harvesting crops, despite a military base located about five kilometers away.
Witnesses said the bandits struck swiftly, overpowering the farmers before fleeing with their captives.
Earlier on the same day, a separate assault reportedly took place in Kakuru community, where bandits targeted a blind resident in his home.
After seizing a mobile phone he claimed belonged to a neighbour, the attackers reportedly amputated his right hand in a fit of rage.
The victim, according to a report on Instablog9ja, was receiving first aid at a patent medicine shop in Kuduru community.
Niger State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed that the police received reports on November 26 of suspected armed men abducting about ten persons from Angwan-Kawo and Kuchipa villages in Shiroro.
He said that efforts to rescue the victims were ongoing.
These incidents come amid a troubling rise in banditry in the state.
Just days earlier, on November 21, two farmers were killed and four abducted in Kwara State, while Shiroro has witnessed multiple attacks this month, including the killing of 13 farmers and the abduction of dozens of residents.
Recall thatover 300 students and teachers from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri, Niger State, were recently abducted, highlighting ongoing threats to rural communities. [Prompt News/Instablog9ja]
