The presidential candidate of African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has endorsed Hamman Tukur as the party’s governorship candidate in Adamawa State.
He did this by ignoring the recognised candidate before now, Omar Suleiman, popularly called Omarana, who won the party’s governorship primary election in May.
The endorsement came as a fresh turn in a long-drawn controversy around the candidacy of the party that featured allegations of plans to substitute Suleiman, in which Atiku has long been suspected by many to have a hand.
Our correspondent learnt yesterday that in the latest development, during an interaction with party members in Yola at the weekend, Atiku raised the hand of Tukur and pronounced him as the governorship candidate.

He confirmed this via a Facebook post in which he declared: “Earlier today, I met with my fellow 2027 Adamawa State African Democratic Congress candidates across all elective positions, including our governorship candidate, Hamman Tukur Ribadu.”
The posting is complemented by pictures, including the one in which Atiku raised Tukur’s hand as the Adamawa State governorship candidate of the ADC.
This is coming in the face of disquiet in the ADC in Adamawa State, weeks after Tukur’s camp, sensing the governorship candidate substitution plot, has been organising street protests condemning the said plan to sidestep an elected candidate with a handpicked one.
Also, Atiku’s public show of support for Tukur, who is of the same tribe with him, is now being painted in ethnic colours in Adamawa State politics where ethnic feelings run high.
Atiku’s decision to choose Tukur over Suleiman is being linked with his feud with a former influential member of the party, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Lawal Babachir, who left the party after bitter disagreement with some leaders, including Atiku.
Atiku is said to have been uncomfortable with Suleiman because Babachir played a pivotal role in his getting the party’s ticket, and the two are believed to have remained close.
