Court sentences guard to nine months imprisonment for stealing

Two apprentices, Okechukwu Umennaike, 27, and Emmanuel Ogbona, 30, on Tuesday, appeared before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court over the alleged theft of N250,000.

The defendants, whose addresses were not provided, pleaded not guilty to the charge of stealing.

The Prosecutor, Insp Akinwale Oriyomi, told the court that the defendants committed the offence on March 3 at about 10:00 a.m. in Ado-Ekiti.

He alleged that the defendants, allegedly stole N250,000 belonging to one Mr Emmanuel Ezeofor, their master.

Oriyomi said that the alleged offence contravened Section 302(1) (a) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.

The prosecutor urged the court to adjourn the case to enable him to study the case file and present his witnesses.

Counsel to the defendants, Mr Timi Omotosho, urged the court to grant the defendants bail, with a promise that they would not jump bail.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Abayomi Adeosun, granted bail to the defendants in the sum of N20,000 with one surety each in like sum.
He adjourned the case till July 25 for hearing.
