Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, a presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Friday, congratulated the new executive of the party in Zamfara State.
He said it was worthy to note that despite the antics of some enemies of democracy who attempted to prevent the holding of the congress, the event went smoothly.
He therefore “heartily congratulates the members of the new Zamfara State Executive Committee on the successful conclusion of the state congress.”
Anyim said he was elated by the quality of leaders who emerged as members of the Zamfara State Executive Committee, especially the emergence of Col. Bala Mande (retd) as the new state chairman, describing him as “a dependable and courageous leader,” who served Nigeria diligently as former military Administrator of Nasarawa State from August 1998 to May 1999 and later as Minister of Environment from July 2003 to June 2005.
Anyim condemned in the strongest of terms, the vicious and senseless invasion of the venue of the congress and the assault on innocent PDP members by thugs, he claimed, were sponsored by individuals who used public resources and positions of authority to intimidate innocent law-abiding citizens.
The former senator urged the Col. Mande-led Zamfara State executive committee to remain focused, bold, fearless and upright in the discharge of their duties.
Anyim, in a statement by his media aide, Sam Nwaobasi, said he hoped the new chairman would bring his wealth of experience to bear on the running of the affairs of Zamfara State chapter of PDP.
“Sen. Anyim is confident that with the caliber of leaders elected to serve in the Zamfara State executive Committee with Col. Mande, PDP is surely on its way to recovering Zamfara State come 2023,” the statement said.
Anyim, a former Senate president commended the rare courage and resilience of PDP members in Zamfara State, who stood their grounds, endured untold intimidation, physical assault, suffered huge loss of personal property, including vehicles and the vandalization of the state party headquarters, to conduct the congress.
He charged Zamfara State PDP members, other PDP members all over the country and indeed all Nigerians, to remain hopeful that Nigeria would, again, return to the era of peace, good governance and respect for the rule of Law from the 29th of May, 2023 by the grace of God and collective will of Nigerians.
He recalled with regrets a similar action of thuggery in Ebonyi State on the 29th of December, where he said hired thugs and hoodlums invaded and disrupted a civic reception organised in honour of Ebonyi State PDP Chairman, Mr Ugochukwu Okorie by his Okposi community in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
He observed with disdain that thuggery, violence, politics of hate and intolerance were beginning to rise ahead of 2023 elections.
He reminded perpetrators of violence and their sponsors that their actions and activities were making life more difficult for innocent citizens and tarnishing the image of Nigeria in the global community.
