The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has unveiled the identities of 16 officers of the Armed Forces of Nigeria recommended for prosecution for allegations of grave misconduct, including an alleged attempt to overthrow the government of President Bola Tinubu.
The development has heightened anxiety in the country especially against the backdrop of the initial stance by the military high command that there no coup plot.
According to a statement issued on Monday by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, a Special Investigative Panel recently completed its assignment and concluded that a number of the officers have serious cases to answer.
Uba explained that those implicated would be subjected to trial by Court Martial in line with military laws and existing regulations.
He added that the probe reviewed the actions and conduct of the affected officers and uncovered behaviour that fell short of the ethics, values, and professional standards required of members of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
The defence spokesperson said that the exercise was strictly an internal disciplinary process aimed at safeguarding discipline, unity, and operational efficiency within the military.
