Some yet-to-be-identified gunmen, suspected to be cultists, have killed the President-General of Ogidi community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Ikwuka Okoye, also known as Anumili.
Reports said that the incident, which occurred late on Friday, was allegedly carried out by members of a rival cult group in revenge of the death of their leader, who was arrested and killed by local security operatives.
During the attack, which was said to have occurred at the School Field, Ogidi, another man whose identity has yet to be ascertained was also gunned down.
Some witnesses in the area said the incident had sparked outrage in the community, with residents and officials condemning the killing.
They said that the deceased leader was duly elected.
One of the sources said, “Daredevil gunmen invaded our community last night. By the time they were done, the town’s President-General, Sir Ikwuka Okoye, and another victim, who happened to be his relative, lay dead on the floor.
“The incident happened at the School Field, Ogidi. The PG and a relation from the same village, who was in his company, were shot dead by gunmen suspected to be cultists on Friday evening.”
The spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a press statement on Saturday. [The Punch]
