Amnesty International has condemned the killing of at least four people during a violent forced eviction carried out by the Kano State government at Rimin Auzinawa in Ungogo Local Government Area.

The human rights organization described the eviction as yet another example of a longstanding practice in Nigeria that flagrantly violates international law and disproportionately affects impoverished communities.

According to Amnesty International, the eviction not only displaced vulnerable residents but also resulted in the loss of lives, livelihoods, and personal belongings.

The organization criticized the Kano State government for what it termed “state violence against the poor,” calling for an immediate halt to forced evictions that punish communities for the government’s urban planning failures.

Witnesses reported chaotic and distressing scenes, with security forces allegedly threatening to set homes ablaze.

The use of lethal force in an operation that rendered already impoverished individuals homeless was described as an act of “crude cruelty” by Amnesty International.

The eviction was carried out without prior consultation with affected residents, adequate notice, compensation, or provision of alternative housing—violating Nigeria’s international legal obligations.

Amnesty International urged the authorities to respect human rights, provide redress for victims, and adopt humane and lawful approaches to urban development.

The organization called on the Nigerian government to put an end to violent forced evictions and implement policies that prioritized the welfare and dignity of marginalized communities.
