Amnesty International has strongly condemned the heinous killing of at least 20 young individuals by gunmen in the merciless attacks on the Adogo Ugbaam and Diom communities in Ukum LGA of Benue state.
These attacks occurred on Friday, July 7, and Saturday, July 8, 2023, and resulted in numerous injuries.
According to a statement released on Sunday by the International Human Rights Watch group, their investigation disclosed that armed men had first targeted a funeral in the Adogo Ugbaam community on Friday night, claiming the lives of three mourners.
The following morning, another group of gunmen raided the Akpuuna and Diom communities, resulting in the deaths of at least 20 individuals and the destruction of a market.
Amnesty International also highlighted a previous incident in which gunmen had killed over 134 people in a series of bloody attacks over a five-day period leading up to Easter in Benue state.
Among these attacks was the tragic event where 24 people seeking shelter as internally displaced persons in a local school were shot dead in a classroom.
The organization emphasized that the ongoing killings in Benue state and the alarming failure of the authorities to put an end to them and bring the suspected perpetrators to justice pose a severe threat to the fundamental right to life.
