An American couple, who went on a shoplifting spree in Changi Airport on Jun. 23 while waiting for their Mumbai-bound flight, have been sentenced to jail.
The 35-year-old man, Kapadia Husain Zoher, was sentenced to 18 days’ jail, while the 30-year-old woman, Kapadia Amatullah, was sentenced to a week in jail.
The duo are a married couple, The Straits Times reported.The husband is a dentist, while the wife is an engineer.
Charge sheets showed that Kapadia Husain Zoher first visited Cosmetics and Perfumes by The Shilla in the departure transit area of Terminal 1 at about 4:58pm on Jun. 30.
There, he stole three bottles of perfume worth S$488 in total.
Later, at 5:02pm, he visited a Louis Vuitton shop in Terminal 1 and stole a pocket organiser valued at S$596.33.
At 5:38pm, together with his wife, Kapadia Husain Zoher stole a Dior Sauvage perfume valued at S$158.40 from the Cosmetics and Perfumes by The Shilla in Terminal 3.
An earlier press release by the Singapore Police Force (SPF) said the woman acted as the lookout during the shoplifting attempt in Terminal 3.
In total, the couple stole items valued at more than S$1,242.
Attempted to hide stolen item under plane seat
The perfumes were discovered missing by staff from Cosmetics and Perfumes by The Shilla in Terminal 1 during a stocktake, SPF shared.
Airport police officers established the identity of the duo through surveillance footage and arrested them before they could leave Singapore for India.
According to charge sheets, at around 6:35pm, Kapadia Amatullah attempted to conceal one of the perfume bottles by placing it underneath an economy class seat, while aboard a Singapore Airlines flight bound for Mumbai.
The husband-and-wife duo were sentenced on Aug. 4.
