▪︎Condemns reported incidents of ethno-religious, tribal violence in some parts of the country
Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Senator George Akume has called for ethno-religious peace, tolerance, understanding and unity among Nigerians, regardless of their ethnic, tribal, religious, geographical differences and backgrounds.
He also condemned the reported cases of ethnic violence in some parts of the country, with the recent incidents of communal attacks in some parts of the South-West, describing them as unhealthy and retrogressive in the current need for unity of purpose, togetherness and patriotic obligations by all Nigerians in charting a more united cause for the oneness, integration and development of the country.
In a statement by his Special Assistant on Media and Public Affairs, Aondona Mkor, the minister maintained that Nigeria was presently battling with the second wave of the global scourge of COVID-19, which has had far reaching implications for the growth and development of the nation, and as such, the critical need for cooperation, unity of purpose, understanding and stability of the system for government to pragmatically address the emerging socio-economic challenges associated with the pandemic.
He further stated that avoidable causes of conflicts and violence among communities must be noted and maintained.
Meanwhile Senator Akume has also called on state governors, elected representatives, local government chairmen, traditional rulers, community leaders, religious leaders, family heads, the youth, women, civil society organisations, to join hands with the federal government in its constitutional commitment to ensure that communities in their domain are not splintered along primordial persuasions.
He called on all differing and waring communities in the country to sheath their swords for the sake of peace, stability and progress of the nation.
The minister specifically called on community leaders and religious to always impress on their subjects and followers the need to seek amicable modalities and approaches in resolving emerging socio-political and economic differences in their communities through dialogue, understanding, tolerance and forgiveness.
