• Urges Nigerian authorities to rescue more
Amnesty International has applauded the release of 137 school children from the Kuriga school, who were abducted by gunmen on the morning of March 7, 2024.
The international human rights organization has emphasized the importance of ensuring the safe rescue and reunion of the remaining abducted children with their families.
Amnesty International urged the Nigerian authorities to intensify efforts to ensure the safe rescue of hundreds of people who have been abducted and held in captivity by gunmen for years.
It stressed the necessity of conducting an impartial and independent investigation into these abductions to ensure that those suspected of responsibility are brought to justice through fair trial.
“The recent spate of abductions underscores a troubling trend, indicating that the government has yet to learn from previous incidents.”
Amnesty International emphasized the urgency for the government to address the root causes of insecurity and implement effective measures to prevent further abductions.
Furthermore, the organization expressed grave concerns over the closure of hundreds of schools in some states of Northern Nigeria due to rising insecurity.
“This closure has left the future of thousands of school children in jeopardy, as access to education becomes increasingly compromised.”
Amnesty International’s call for action “underscores the pressing need for the Nigerian government to prioritize the safety and well-being of its citizens, particularly vulnerable groups such as school children.”
It urged the government to take decisive steps to address the security challenges plaguing the country and ensure that every child could access education without fear of abduction or violence.
