The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to postpone the FCT area council elections scheduled for February 21, citing the need to respect the Ramadan fast observed by a portion of the electorate.
In a letter to INEC, signed by the party’s National Chairman, Sen. David Mark, and National Secretary, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, the ADC drew attention to the cultural and religious significance of the Ramadan period and the potential impact on voter participation.
The party requested that the election date be shifted to a date after the Ramadan period to ensure inclusivity and fairness for all voters.
The ADC said it believed that electoral legitimacy is enhanced when processes encourage broad participation, promote diversity, and reinforce confidence in democratic institutions.
The party’s said its request was guided by the need to protect inclusivity and ensure that all citizens can exercise their constitutional rights.
The ADC has expressed its willingness to comply with due process and has requested guidance on procedural requirements for submitting applications.
The party’s engagement with INEC is seen as institutional, and it remains committed to the democratic process.
The observance of Ramadan is a significant aspect of the Islamic faith, and the ADC’s request highlights the importance of considering the needs of all voters, regardless of their religious affiliations. By postponing the election, INEC can ensure that all eligible voters can participate in the democratic process without any undue constraints.
