ADC moves to challenge APC dominance in Borno ahead of 2027

The African Democratic Congress is making its biggest push yet to break the APC’s hold on Borno State, rolling out heavyweight candidates for Senate, House of Representatives, and State Assembly seats.

Former APC governorship aspirant Idris Mamman Durkwa will fly the ADC flag for Borno South, with Bulama Fugu and Babagana Zanna also named in the lineup. Political observers say it’s the strongest opposition realignment in the state ahead of 2027.

The consensus primaries held in Maiduguri set up ADC candidates to face some of Borno’s biggest political names, including Senator Ali Ndume, Senate Chief Whip Mohammed Tahir Monguno, and Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan.

ADC Organising Secretary Mohammed Bolori said the party affirmed about 25 State Assembly candidates and eight House of Representatives candidates through consensus. He called it part of a broader plan to strengthen the party’s grassroots base before the next election.

Bolori said ADC’s strategy is to offer “credible alternatives” as frustration grows over insecurity, economic hardship, and governance in Borno and beyond. He criticised the APC-led administration and promised ADC candidates would focus on security, economic recovery, and social welfare if elected.

The move is set to heat up the race in Borno South especially, where Ndume recently got fresh endorsements from APC stakeholders and Deputy Speaker Abdullahi Musa Askira.

With governorship primaries and more House of Representatives contests still ahead, analysts say ADC is positioning for one of Borno’s fiercest electoral battles in recent years.
