The African Democratic Congress has said it is exploring a consensus arrangement in selecting its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, disclosed this on Saturday during an appearance on One-on-One, a programme on Arise Television.
Abdullahi explained that the party is weighing available options provided under the Electoral Act, noting that while both direct primaries and consensus remain viable, indirect primaries have been ruled out.
According to him, the consensus model remains the most preferred option due to its cost-effectiveness and ability to foster unity within the party.
“We are making deliberate efforts to achieve a consensus because it is less expensive for us.
“Our ideal outcome is to build agreement among stakeholders, and that is what we are working towards,” he said.
The ADC spokesperson also took a swipe at the ruling All Progressives Congress, asserting that the party’s cohesion is largely dependent on the current administration.
He argued that the APC may struggle to maintain its structure beyond the tenure of President Bola Tinubu, describing him as the unifying force within the party.
Abdullahi further characterised the APC as a platform primarily established to secure the presidencies of the late Muhammadu Buhari and Tinubu, suggesting that its foundational objective has largely been achieved.

He also alleged that the ruling party was showing signs of unease ahead of future elections, despite its dominance across states and the National Assembly.
Questioning the party’s confidence, Abdullahi said it was paradoxical for a political party with significant control of governance structures to appear unsettled.
He maintained that under a credible electoral process, the APC would face stiff challenges, claiming that public dissatisfaction with its leadership could affect its chances.
Meanwhile, prominent figures such as Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi and Rotimi Amaechi are among those being speculated as potential presidential aspirants on the ADC platform.
Rabiu Kwankwaso formally joins the ADC on Monday, March 30, 2026.
