There were feelers Sunday afternoon that the 317 kidnapped schoolgirls of Government Secondary School, Jangebe in Zamfara State, have been freed by the bandits.
But the Zamfara State Government said it had yet to receive the students.
They were kidnapped on the night of February 25, more than a week after 42 students and staff members were kidnapped from Government Science College, GSC, in Kagara, Niger State.
The freed girls, according to a report by Prompt News, were taken to the palace of the Emir of Anka for onward transportation to Gusau, the state capital.
The girls, who were kidnapped on Friday night were believed to have been taken to a forest by their abductors, who were said to have disguised as security personnel.
Multiple sources said the girls were kept in the forest between Dangulbi and Sabon Birnin Banaga in the Mary Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
As in the case of the released Kagara, Niger State students and teachers, details had yet to be given whether the authorities paid any ransom before the schoolgirls regained their freedom.
But Jamilu Iliyasu B/Magaji, a Press Secretary in the office of the State Govetnor, said the students had not been released.
He blamed the online media report to the fertile imagination of a newspaper reporter who started the rumour with his report.
He said the government would happily and immediately inform the world’s as soon as rhe students were released.
