The Alumni Association of the National Institute has warned that Nigeria cannot achieve sustainable development unless workers’ welfare and productivity become a national priority.
In a Workers’ Day message on Friday, AANI President Ambassador Emmanuel Obi Okafor praised Nigerian workers as the “true backbone” of the nation, saluting their resilience amid biting economic hardship and rising living costs.
“Nigerian workers remain the driving force behind our economic growth, national security, essential services, and socio-economic stability,” Okafor said in a statement on behalf of the association’s National Executive Committee and members.
“From factories and farms to classrooms, healthcare facilities, corporate offices, and security outposts, you constitute the true backbone of our dear nation.”
AANI said it recognizes the “extraordinary sacrifices” of workers who still show up daily “with commitment and hope for a better tomorrow” despite inflation and hardship.
The association called for stronger collaboration among government, the organized private sector, labour unions, and civil society to deliver fair wages, better working conditions, enhanced welfare packages, and protection of fundamental workers’ rights.

Okafor stressed that productivity and welfare must move together. “Sustainable national development can only be achieved when the welfare and productivity of the workforce are given top priority,” he said.
AANI prayed for “renewed strength, divine protection, safety at all workplaces, and abundant rewards” for the labour of Nigerian workers at home and in the diaspora.
The association said it stands with workers as the engine of nation-building.
