The Alumni Association of the National Institute has celebrated the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, as he turned 85 on May 14.
In a statement, AANI President Ambassador Emmanuel Obi Okafor described the monarch as “a towering symbol of wisdom, statesmanship, cultural pride, and transformational leadership.”
Achebe holds a unique place in AANI’s history as a member of the Institute’s first Senior Executive Course in 1979. That pioneering set the tone for strategic leadership and policy discussions in Nigeria.
Before ascending the throne as the 21st Obi of Onitsha, he built a distinguished career with Shell Petroleum Development Company and Shell International in London, rising to Senior Corporate Adviser.
Since becoming Obi, Achebe has balanced cultural custodianship with advocacy for education, peace, national unity, and youth development. AANI said his influence “transcends generations and borders,” calling his 85 years “a remarkable legacy of integrity, excellence, service, and humanity.”
The Association prayed for his continued health, wisdom, and years of service.
“ AANI celebrates not only a royal father of global repute, but also a mentor, bridge-builder, patriot, and elder statesman,” the statement read.
