In a rapidly evolving world where infrastructure serves as the backbone of economic and social development, the state of our roads is not merely a matter of convenience but a critical issue that affects the very fabric of our communities. It is with this understanding that I write to highlight a significant infrastructural deficiency that has persisted for decades—the Ishiborri-Afrike road, a mere 8-kilometer stretch linking Ishiborri in Ogoja with Afrike in Bekwarra Local Government Area. This road, which has been in disrepair since its last grading by the Shagari government in 1979, represents a missed opportunity for progress that we can no longer afford to overlook.
Governor Otu, your administration’s proactive stance on road expansion and rehabilitation across Northern Cross River is both commendable and encouraging. Your commitment to improving the region’s infrastructure has been evident in your numerous initiatives aimed at enhancing connectivity, fostering economic growth, and uplifting the lives of our citizens. However, the Ishiborri-Afrike road remains an essential yet neglected link that urgently requires your attention and resources. Its rehabilitation and construction are not just important—they are pivotal for the comprehensive development of our communities. I present three critical reasons why this road project must be prioritized:
The dilapidated state of the Ishiborri-Afrike road has had a detrimental impact on the economic vitality of the surrounding communities. For too long, residents and businesses have struggled with the severe logistical challenges posed by the poor road conditions, which hinder the movement of goods, services, and people. This has stifled economic opportunities, restricted access to markets, and discouraged potential investors who are deterred by the high costs associated with transportation inefficiencies.
Constructing this road will unlock the economic potential of the Ishiborri and Afrike communities by facilitating smoother and more reliable access to local and regional markets. Improved transportation infrastructure will not only reduce the cost of doing business but will also attract new investments, stimulate entrepreneurship, and create job opportunities. A robust road network is fundamental to economic resilience, and by addressing this infrastructural gap, your administration will lay the groundwork for sustainable development that will benefit the entire region. Infrastructure is more than concrete and asphalt; it is a conduit for social connection and cultural exchange. The Ishiborri-Afrike road serves as a critical link between our communities, but its current state has created both a physical and symbolic barrier that has weakened the bonds between our people. The inability to travel easily between Ishiborri and Afrike has led to a reduction in social interactions, cultural activities, and collaborative efforts that are essential for community building.
By investing in the construction of this road, your administration has the opportunity to bridge this divide, fostering unity and promoting a sense of shared identity among the people of Ogoja and Bekwarra. Enhanced connectivity will facilitate greater collaboration on community projects, cultural events, and social initiatives, strengthening the social fabric that binds us together. A well-maintained road is more than a route from one place to another; it is a pathway to unity, mutual understanding, and collective progress.
The current hazardous condition of the Ishiborri-Afrike road poses a significant risk to the safety and well-being of residents, particularly in times of emergency. The lack of a reliable, direct route has forced Afrike residents to navigate a circuitous 25-kilometer journey through Ukpah to reach Igoli—a trip that should ideally cover only 8 kilometers if the road were in usable condition. This not only leads to unnecessary delays but also places lives at risk when timely access to healthcare and emergency services is crucial.
The construction of this road will greatly improve safety and accessibility for all residents, ensuring that essential services such as ambulances, fire services, and other emergency responders can reach those in need without delay. In emergencies, every minute counts, and the current state of the road leaves our communities vulnerable. By addressing this issue, your administration will be making a direct investment in the safety and security of our citizens, demonstrating a commitment to their welfare and well-being.
Governor Otu, your leadership in addressing the infrastructural challenges facing Cross River State has been marked by vision and determination. The construction of the Ishiborri-Afrike road represents an opportunity to extend this commitment to a community that has long been in need of attention. By prioritizing this project, you will not only enhance the quality of life for the Afrike and Ishiborri people but also reinforce the trust and confidence of your constituents. This is not merely an investment in infrastructure—it is an investment in the future of our communities.
We look forward to your favorable consideration of this urgent matter and remain hopeful that your administration will take the necessary steps to make the Ishiborri-Afrike road a symbol of progress and unity. Your support will undoubtedly be remembered as a pivotal moment in our collective journey towards sustainable development and enhanced community cohesion.
Thank you for your time and thoughtful consideration. We eagerly anticipate your positive response and continued leadership in making this vital project a reality.
