A 39-year-old teacher, Joshua Afolayan, is desperately seeking help after a botched surgery at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) left him without kidneys.
Afolayan underwent surgery to remove his damaged right kidney after a road accident, but doctors allegedly removed both his kidneys without consent.
Afolayan claimed that despite multiple pre-surgery scans showing two separate kidneys, doctors told him he had a “horseshoe kidney” after the operation.
He discovered that both kidneys had been removed when follow-up scans were withheld, and he was forced to rely on dialysis to survive.
The Ekiti State Government has taken action against the medical personnel involved.
The surgeon responsible for the operation has been dismissed, and other members of the surgical team were suspended for one month pending further administrative review.
The government also pledged to fund Afolayan’s kidney transplant and cover post-transplant care and related medical expenses for two years.
Afolayan urged the state government to provide him with intensive medical support, warning that further delays could be fatal.
“I want to live like others,” he said. “I’m 39 years old. I have a wife and three children. I want to eat, drink, urinate, sleep, and take care of my family.”
The Ekiti State Government has ordered a comprehensive reorganisation of relevant departments at EKSUTH to strengthen clinical governance, accountability, and patient safety.
The government said it remained committed to restoring public confidence in the state’s health system and would not hesitate to act where professional standards were breached.
