2027: Opposition forges historic pact to field single candidate against Tinubu

In a decisive move that could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape, the country’s major opposition parties have agreed to present a single presidential candidate to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

The resolution, hammered out Saturday at a high-stakes national summit inside the Banquet Hall of the Oyo State Government House, signals the most serious attempt at opposition unity since the 2013 merger that birthed the APC.

● A United Front

Reading the communique, factional PDP national chairman Taminu Turaki said the alliance was “driven by a shared commitment to rescue the nation” from what opposition leaders called deepening economic distress, insecurity, and democratic backsliding.

Parties at the table included the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). Present were political heavyweights Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Aminu Tambuwal, David Mark, Rauf Aregbesola, and Pat Utomi — a lineup that places former rivals under one roof.

● The Stakes

The opposition accused the ruling All Progressives Congress of seeking to “entrench a one-party system” and vowed to defend Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.

To level the field, they demanded urgent amendments to the Electoral Act 2026, arguing that current provisions threaten poll credibility.

● Fire at INEC

In a sharp escalation, the bloc declared it had “no confidence” in INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan, alleging bias and questioning his capacity to deliver free, fair, and transparent elections in 2027. They condemned INEC’s new guidelines as “restrictive” and designed to box out opposition parties, calling for the deadline for party primaries to be extended to the end of July 2026.

● Beyond the Ballot

The communique also demanded the release of detained political figures and others it saidwere facing “politically motivated harassment,” warning that such actions choke democratic participation.

● The Road to 2027

Opposition leaders praised Nigerians for their resilience and appealed for public backing as they attempt to forge a coalition strong enough to unseat an incumbent.

THE CONCLAVE  reports that the Ibadan summit marks a strategic pivot: from fragmented campaigns to a consolidated war room. If the pact holds, 2027 will not be a crowded opposition field — it will be a direct referendum on Tinubu’s presidency.

The real test, THE CONCLAVE further reports, begins now: turning a communique into a candidate, and a coalition into a campaign.
