Former Minister of Information, Prof. Jerry Gana, has called on the Federal Government to fulfill its campaign promise to tackle insecurity, saying the people would no longer tolerate failures or excuses under any guise.
The erstwhile Minister, in a chat with journalists in Abuja, also condemned the alleged plot by some politicians to frustrate the conduct of transparent elections in 2023.
He expressed worries at the spate of insecurity across Nigeria, saying the call for the decentralisation of the security agencies had become imperative because the people were fed up by the wanton killings in their communities.
Jerry Gana said: “The security situation is definitely something of profound worry. What this government promised to deliver, especially on the issue of security, they have failed to deliver.
“Therefore, the people should wait for the 2023 election and not get frustrated, because it will be a way of rejuvenating the government and putting new people in power. At the elections, we should punish those who have failed. The people should see elections as the beauty of democracy.”
The ex-Minister warned: “The 2023 election must not be rigged. There shouldn’t be any interference with the rules of the game. There must be proper procedures so that the elections will be peaceful and the peoples choice will be respected.
“The peoples’ will must prevail and if they feel very disappointed with the government, the people should be allowed to express it in the election by rejecting bad politicians and putting good people in government so that there would be peace, security, good governance moving forward.”
He, however, stressed that all hands must be on deck to prepare the people for the coming election by transforming them from within and raising a civil society that is governed by uprightness, good living and obedience to the law.
On the solution to Nigeria’s insecurity, Jerry Gana said the call for the Federal Government to unbundle the security agencies made sense, noting that events in the country showed that the time was up for Nigeria to operate only a central police.
“The security infrastructure of the nation must be totally re-organised. The next government must look at security infrastructure of Nigeria and turn it in such a way that there is adequate security in every community so that people that do evil are dealt with immediately, firmly and decisively,” he added.
