Zulum pledges relief, resettlement for displaced residents as insecurity spurs fresh crisis in northern Borno

Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has pledged immediate humanitarian aid and long-term resettlement support for thousands displaced by renewed insurgent attacks in northern Borno.

Zulum made the pledge Sunday during a visit to internally displaced persons sheltering in Monguno town, where he met families and assessed camp conditions amid fresh displacement from communities around Marte, Guzamala, Abadam and the Lake Chad basin.

“We have examined the situation critically alongside the hierarchy of the Nigerian military, and it has been concluded that we shall provide immediate humanitarian support to these displaced communities, especially in the areas of water, shelter, and sanitation,” the governor said.

He added that medium and long-term solutions would also be adopted to enable safe returns to ancestral homes. Over 50,000 returnees are currently in Marte LGA, he said, with plans underway to facilitate more returns under a coordinated recovery strategy.

The visit comes amid persistent attacks on remote communities and military formations in the Lake Chad region, despite years of military operations. Zulum urged residents to share timely intelligence with security agencies, stressing that “security is everybody’s business.”

He directed the Secretary to the State Government, commissioners for Local Government and Emirate Affairs, Internal Security, and the Marte LGA chairman to work out modalities for the intervention.

Beyond the IDP camp, Zulum inspected the Monguno Eye Hospital, commended staff, and announced financial support to boost morale. He also received a security briefing at the Forward Operation Base in Mairari.

He was accompanied by Senator Mohammed Monguno, Speaker Abdulkarim Lawan, Rep. Bukar Talba, and other senior officials.
