The Auchi Youth Council has expressed deep concern over the resurgence of cult-related violence in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo.

In a statement issued on Sunday and made available to newsmen, the Chairman of the Council, Mr Ahmed Oshiobugie, called on youths in the community to completely renounce cultism and violence in all its forms.

According to him, the recent killing of three persons in a cult clash poses a serious threat to the peace and unity of Auchi.

“We cannot stand by in silence as our young people—our most valuable asset—are caught in the destructive cycle of cultism and criminality,” Oshiobugie said.

“The resurgence of cult clashes in Auchi is deeply regrettable. Every youth that dies in these senseless acts is a future lost.

“We must make a conscious decision to preserve peace and protect our collective destiny.”

The Youth Council called on the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services, local vigilante groups, and other security agencies to live up to their responsibilities.

“These avoidable deaths could have been prevented if law enforcement and protection of lives and property were treated with the seriousness they deserve.”

Oshiobugie also urged the Local council authority, the National Orientation Agency (NOA), and the Ministry of Youth and Sports to take immediate steps to curb youth involvement in cultism.

He suggested such steps should include public enlightenment campaigns, reorientation programmes, mentorship platforms, and practical youth empowerment initiatives.

While commending the Edo Government under Gov. Monday Okpebholo for efforts to tackle cultism, he noted that the impact of such interventions had not been adequately felt in Edo North, especially Auchi.

“We therefore appeal to the governor to urgently direct focused attention and action towards tackling cultism in our community,” he added.

Oshiobugie noted that Auchi had historically been a peaceful, hospitable, and inclusive community, welcoming to all regardless of tribe or religion.

“We have always opened our arms to others. Now, we must collectively safeguard that legacy by rejecting every form of violence and criminality.”

The council called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society groups, the media, and security agencies to unite in putting an end to the rising tide of cult-related violence.
