A 35-year-old man has suffered permanent injury after his wife allegedly attacked him with a kitchen knife during a dispute over bringing a second wife into their home.
The incident took place in Angri, Campania, where the Bangladeshi couple had recently moved into a larger house they believed could accommodate both wives.
While bigamy and polygamy are illegal in Italy, the practice persists in some migrant communities.
Authorities say the disagreement arose when the man’s 35-year-old second wife objected to living with the first wife.
The alleged attack occurred while the man was resting after lunch.
He reportedly woke up screaming in pain and staggered onto a first-floor balcony for help.
Two women passing by heard his cries, entered the property, and applied pressure to control the bleeding until emergency responders arrived.
The severed organ was placed on ice in an attempt to preserve it, but surgeons later said reattachment was not possible due to the extent of the damage.
Police found the wife at the scene in a state of shock and allegedly still holding the knife.
She has been arrested and charged with attempted murder.
Investigators are also looking into whether the husband was drugged prior to the assault.

The case is being handled by Carabinieri officers under Commander Gianfranco Albanese and prosecutor Gianluca Caputo.
Domestic abuse lawyer Angelo Pisani described the incident as “unprecedented violence,” adding that “this kind of violence must always be condemned, regardless of who committed it.”
