The Bayelsa Pre-season Football Tournament launched on Monday in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, as a preparatory event to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season starting August 22, 2025.
The tournament hosted by the Bayelsa State Government aims to prepare Bayelsa United and showcase local talent to NPFL clubs.
Warri Wolves opened the tournament with a commanding 3-0 win over Bayelsa United’s U-20 team in Group A. Goals from Kudus Olayinola (15th minute), Ademola Adebambo (62nd), and Israel Oladeji (88th) secured the victory.
Coach Napoleon Alumua attributed the performance to a strong mix of old and new players, commending the tournament’s role in preparing for the season.
In the second match, Bendel Insurance defeated hosts Bayelsa United 2-0, with Isaac Omijie (47th) and Victor Peter (88th) finding the net. Bayelsa’s Jawad Mustapha missed a penalty in the 77th minute.

Bayelsa United’s coach, Meremu Okara, remained optimistic despite the loss, pointing to squandered first-half chances.
Bendel Insurance’s Greg Ikhenoba said the match helped refine his starting lineup, with the Hawkins noting the team’s growing cohesion.
The tournament continues Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at Samson Siasia Stadium, with Warri Wolves facing Eternal Grace Ministry (EGM) FC at 1:00 p.m and Bendel Insurance playing Kun Khalifat FC of Owerri at 3:00 p.m.
