FCT Minister Nyesom Wike said Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s decision to exit the 2027 Rivers governorship race is linked to a political peace agreement aimed at stabilising the state.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Monday after inspecting infrastructure projects, Wike said the move aligned with understandings reached during reconciliation talks involving key Rivers political actors.
Fubara had earlier stepped down from the APC governorship primary, saying the decision followed consultations and was taken “in the interest of peace, unity, and stability.”
In a statement titled “My Decision to Withdraw from the Rivers State Gubernatorial Primaries,” he said it came after discussions with family, allies, and associates.
Wike said the withdrawal was expected under the deal, which he claimed included dropping impeachment threats against Fubara on condition that he would not seek a second term.
