The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, says the Federal Government is taking both diplomatic and domestic measures to address recent comments by U.S. President Donald Trump threatening military action against Islamist militants in Nigeria.

Speaking to State House correspondents after meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday, Idris said the President remains calm and focused, assuring that Nigeria is actively engaging the international community to clarify its efforts in tackling insecurity and promoting religious harmony.

“The government has intensified engagements at multiple levels.

“Channels of communication have been opened with international organisations to explain what Nigeria has done, and what more we intend to do to address both domestic and global concerns,” he stated.

The minister added that President Tinubu has been meeting religious leaders across different faiths to strengthen unity and understanding.

“Mr. President continues to engage religious groups, regional and continental bodies, and international partners to ensure Nigeria defeats criminal elements distorting the country’s image,” he said.

Idris dismissed allegations of religious intolerance as “absolutely false,” stressing that Nigeria’s constitution guarantees freedom of religion for all citizens.

“Nowhere in Nigeria has there been any policy or action that favours one religion over another.

“What we are confronting are extremists trying to divide the nation and create a false narrative,” he said.

He urged Nigerians to remain united and avoid rhetoric that could fuel division.

“This is a time for reflection on our unity and nationhood. Mr. President is calm but taking this matter very seriously.

“Every relevant agency is working to address it, and we are confident that Nigeria will emerge stronger,” Idris assured.
