The Western Marine Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has recorded spectacular seizures.

Speaking to Press Men at the Customs Command, the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Abubakar Umar showcased 29,660 parcels of cannabis sativa weighing 16.663kg.

Umar decried the harmful effect of illicit drugs, “Importation like this won’t help our country’s development. We all know the harmful effects of cannabis sativa on our youths. It is illegal to ship such contraband into Nigeria and we will continue to thwart the efforts of unscrupulous importers who derive joy in bringing in such substance into the country.”

Similarly, a total number of twenty-eight thousand, seven hundred and thirty-seven litres of PMS found in one thousand and seventy-seven kegs (25litres) worth four million, nine hundred and twenty-one thousand, seven hundred were intercepted along some creeks in Badagry.

“Improper importation or exportation of PMS HS Code 2710.12.4000 and b2710.12.5000 across land borders and waterways in Nigeria is contrary to Section 46 (forfeiture of good improperly imported) and section 63 (forfeiture of goods improperly exported) of Customs and Excise Management (CEMA) Cap C45 LFN 2004 as amended.” Umar stated.

Other seizures are 1,577bags of foreign parboiled rice equivalent of two trailers load and more, seven wooden boats with four engines as means of conveyance, two sacks of suspected gunpowder, all with a duty paid value of N2.2billion

The 29,660 parcels of seized cannabis were handed over to the representative of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Marine Command East Mole, Victoria Island, Isaac Elijah, for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Abubakar Umar appreciated the cooperation of the host community, lauding the commitment, dedication and bravery of his Operatives in creeks and on waterways.

He, however, thanked the Comptroller General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali and his management team for the continuous support to the Command, especially the anticipated seven newly constructed patrol boats, which will further help in suppressing smuggling on the waterways.

“We are expecting seven newly constructed boats. Right now we have nine boats and over 250 trained officers and we expect 50 more officers to join us from the training school later this year. These are obvious provisions that would enable the Command to be more resolute in its activities,” he added.
