Peter Obi says uniting Nigeria will be his first task as president, pledging to make security, accountability, and constitutional governance the foundation of his administration.
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) spoke on May 19 after completing the party’s screening process in Abuja. He said Nigeria’s divisions and insecurity had left citizens unable to live without fear.
“We are not a united nation; my primary goal is to bring Nigeria together,” Obi said. “We want mothers to feel safe when their children head to school or work. We envision a Nigeria where travel throughout the country can be done without fear.”
Obi argued that unity must be backed by adherence to the constitution, particularly its provisions on federal character and inclusivity. He linked national cohesion to economic stability, noting that many Nigerians go to bed uncertain about their next meal.
The former Anambra governor said fighting corruption would be central to his plan, accusing politicians of prioritizing elections over citizens’ welfare.
“Public resources must not be turned into private wealth. Politicians are too focused on upcoming elections while the citizens are suffering. This has to change,” he said.
Obi also addressed the length of the NDC screening process, calling it a sign of democratic practice. He said the exercise was meant to verify constitutional qualifications and documentation for all aspirants.

On his status as the only candidate, Obi said he was awaiting official confirmation from the party. “I don’t know if anyone else has submitted an application. Until the party officially names me as the only candidate that remains to be seen,” he said.
He commended the 17-member screening committee chaired by former Ebonyi governor Dr. Sam Egwu, for what he described as a thorough and professional process. He also praised NDC leadership for upholding democratic principles.
The NDC had closed sales of presidential nomination forms on May 19, with Obi reported as the only aspirant to purchase the form.
