An own goal by Captain Williams Troost-Ekong cost the Super Eagles an away victory against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa in a World Cup Qualification encounter on Tuesday.

Troost-Ekong scored the own goal in the must-win match against South Africa before Calvin Bassey scored the equaliser before the half time in the tensed match.

The draw against South Africa has completely taken the qualification of the Super Eagles for the 2026 World Cup out of the hands of the team.

This was as Rwanda defeated Zimbabwe 1-0 to make three of the teams in Group C to be on 11 points.

South Africa, which has 17 points at the close of the encounter with Nigeria, tops the group, and will have the rest of their two matches at home.

Technically, one of the two matches is an away game, but to be played on South Africa soil.

Nigeria is second on the log with a better goal difference than Benin and Rwanda which also have 11 points. [Eagle Online]
