Amid unconfirmed reports about his arrest and eventual release all happening within 18 hours of Tuesday evening (May 4, 2021) and afternoon of Wednesday, (May 5, 2021), the Department of State Services (DSS) denied arrest of the Spiritual Director of Adoration Ministries Enugu, Father Ejike Mbaka.

The uncertainty over his whereabouts ignited protests in Enugu.

They alleged that Mbaka suddenly disappeared. He was reportedly last seen on Tuesday evening.

The youths reportedly gave giving Federal Government a 48-hour ultimatum to release Father Mbaka

Many of them said that Mbaka, who recently called for the resignation or impeachment of President Muhammadu Buhari over worsening insecurity, was either picked up by security operatives or gunmen.

But DSS spokesperson, Dr Peter Afunanya in a swift riposte, said the cleric was not in its custody.

He said: “This is not true. Fr Mbaka was not picked up by the DSS. Rev Fr Mbaka is not with the DSS. The DSS did not pick him up, please.”

There were eports later on Wednesday that the state had again erupted in jubilation as the vocal priests was said to have been “released”.

No confirmation had come from any organisations that they arrested Mbaka or even from Mbaka himself concerning who arrested him. The question is who “arrested” and “released” Mbaka?
