A video has surfaced online showing former Rivers State Governor and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, in some kind of celebration and solemn thanksgiving worship to the Almighty God.

Wike is believed to be celebrating the verdict of the Supreme Court’s that sacked all local government chairmen in Rivers State.

The ruling, delivered by Justice Jamilu Tukur, declared the October 5, 2024, local government elections in the state invalid, citing gross violations of the Electoral Act by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).

The apex court held that the electoral body continued voter registration even after announcing an election date, an act deemed a fundamental breach of due process.

Wike’s rift with his political protégé and current governor, Siminalayi Fubara, is writ-large

The two have been at loggerheads since Fubara took office, with the governor gradually asserting independence from Wike’s political influence—an act seen as defiance by his former godfather.

The Supreme Court ruling is a major setback for Governor Fubara, as the now-sacked local government chairmen were largely considered his loyalists.

Their removal further weakens Fubara’s political structure at the grassroots level, potentially tilting power dynamics in favour of Wike, who has been working to maintain his influence in the state.

With this latest development, the fate of local government administration in Rivers State remains uncertain.

The ruling raises significant questions about governance in Rivers State.
