- Says ‘I’m finishing stronger as a Christian’
Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, made an important announcement during a Valedictory Thanksgiving Service on May 28th, 2023, marking the completion of his 8-year tenure. In a gesture of mercy, Governor Ortom granted relief to 8 convicted prisoners who were on death row and released 13 other convicts who had been sentenced to life imprisonment. The service took place at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Signs and Wonders Parish, located on Gboko Road, Makurdi.
During his speech, Governor Ortom expressed his gratitude to God and the people of Benue State for the opportunity to serve as their Governor over the past eight years. He mentioned that he had approved the report of the prerogative of mercy, which resulted in converting the death sentences of eight convicts to life imprisonment. Additionally, he authorized the release of 11 inmates who had been serving life sentences, and he paid the fines for two other inmates who would now be granted their freedom.

Governor Ortom acknowledged the collaborative efforts and support from outgoing members of his cabinet, the judiciary, and the legislature. He emphasized the importance of their cooperation, stating that his administration had enacted more laws than any other in the state’s history to ensure the rule of law. The Governor also expressed his appreciation to traditional rulers for their counsel and encouragement throughout his tenure.
Deputy Governor Engr. Benson Abounu highlighted the harmonious working relationship he had with Governor Ortom, noting the significant achievements made in various sectors during their time in office. He specifically mentioned the enactment of the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law, which was widely recognized as a legacy achievement throughout the country.
Other notable figures who spoke at the service included the Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Titus Uba, the Chief Judge of the State, Justice Maurice Ikpambese, the State Head of Service, Mrs. Veronica Onyeke, the Tor Tiv, His Royal Majesty, Prof. James Iorzua Ayatse, and the Och’Idoma, His Royal Majesty, John Elaigwu Odogbo. They all praised Governor Ortom for his dedication to governance, his commitment to upholding the rule of law, and his efforts in maintaining peace and development in the state.
Various political and traditional leaders, as well as party stalwarts, were present at the church service to show their support for Governor Ortom and commemorate his tenure. The service concluded with an exhortation from the Pastor-in-Charge of RCCG Region 40 headquarters, Pastor S. A. Folasayo, who commended the Governor for his ability to balance his political office with his commitment to God and his unwavering pursuit of truth, justice, and equity. Pastor Folasayo urged Christians to live their lives with caution, as one day, everyone will face judgment before God.
