Ambassador Leonard described Walter Carrington as a champion of civil liberties, democracy, and closer ties between the United States and Nigeria
“I mourn the passing of my distinguished predecessor as United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Walter Carrington, who served in that capacity from 1993-1997. A champion of civil liberties, democracy, and closer ties between the U.S. and Nigeria,” she said.
Ambassador Leonard said Ambassador Carrington’s spirit would continue to live on through the Carrington Youth Fellowship Initiative, which promotes young Nigerians committed to putting this distinguished statesman’s ideals into practice.
“I know our Carrington alumnae and countless Nigerians join me in offering condolences to his family,” She added.
