The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has described as fake news a report doing the rounds that it had extended the validity of old N500 and N1,000 notes to May 1st.
The CBN said it never gave any such directive on Tuesday, February 21, after a meeting it purportedly held with President Muhammadu Buhari.
The report quoted a statement purportedly issued by the Director of Communications, Osita Nwanisobi, in which he was quoted to have said: “Due to the current and unpleasant situation in Nigeria, in line with Mr. President, after having a closed meeting with him on the 20th of February, 2023, Central Bank of Nigeria has been directed to only reissue and recirculate the old N200, N500, and N1,000.”
The apex bank, in a swift riposte, used the same statement purportedly issued by it to put a lie to the report by stamping “FAKE NEWS” in capital letters and in red colour to catch public attention on the false statement doing the rounds.
Read below the official statement by the CBN restating its compliance with President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive on the reissuance of only the old N200 notes into circulation as legal tender from February 10 to April 10, 2023.
