The Governing Council of the University of Ibadan has appointed Professor Peter Olamakinde Olapegba as the institution’s 14th substantive Vice-Chancellor.
The appointment was ratified on Wednesday following a competitive process that began ahead of the expiration of the tenure of the current Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode Adebowale, on November 1, 2026.
Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Chief Adebisi Akande, announced the decision. He said the process was conducted in line with provisions of the University Act.
According to Akande, six applications were received initially. A search team later identified two additional qualified academics, bringing the total number of candidates to eight.

All eight candidates underwent assessment by the Governing Council. The top five proceeded to final interviews conducted by the Joint Council-Senate Selection Board. The board recommended Olapegba as the most suitable candidate, and the council unanimously approved the appointment.
Akande described the exercise as thorough, transparent and highly competitive.
Professor Olapegba currently serves as Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration. He is a professor in the Department of Psychology and a specialist in social and health psychology.
He has held several leadership roles at UI, including Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Director of Alumni Relations, and Chairman of the UI@75 Anniversary Committee.
Olapegba joined the University of Ibadan as an Assistant Lecturer in 2000 and was promoted to professor in 2014.
As Vice-Chancellor-designate, he will assume office in November 2026 at the end of Professor Adebowale’s tenure.
