UNILAG alerts public to fraudulent individuals impersonating institution’s VC
The University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, has alerted public attention to fraudulent individuals impersonating its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, to deceive unsuspecting victims with fake procurement contracts.
In an official statement released on Tuesday by the university’s spokesperson, Mrs. Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, UNILAG disclosed that the scammers had been using various social media platforms — including LinkedIn, Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and WhatsApp — to falsely pose as the Vice-Chancellor.
Their goal, the university explained, was to lure individuals into believing they were being offered legitimate contracts to supply laptops and computers.
These fraudsters reportedly used convincing tactics, such as demanding secrecy, requesting upfront payments, and proposing illegal profit-sharing deals — including a 60/40 split.
They also diverted communication to personal email addresses instead of official UNILAG channels, a clear red flag.
UNILAG emphasised that all its procurement processes were transparent, competitive, and conducted strictly in accordance with Nigerian Procurement Laws.
“At no time would any legitimate representative of the university — including the Vice-Chancellor — demand upfront payments, suggest kickbacks, or use personal emails and social media for official transactions,” the statement said.
The university has reported the matter to law enforcement agencies and is fully cooperating with ongoing investigations to apprehend and prosecute those responsible.
UNILAG urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity immediately.
“For verification, members of the public can contact the university through official email addresses: communicationunit@unilag.edu.ng or vcoffice@unilag.edu.ng the statement said
The statement confirmed the university’s commitment to upholding integrity and transparency, warning that any misuse of its name or impersonation of its officials would not be tolerated.
