The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has initiated a formal investigation into serious allegations of extortion and fraudulent practices allegedly carried out during the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) mobilisation process.

In an internal memo dated May 27, 2025, signed by the Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Egaga Patrick Ikani, the university expressed grave concern over what it described as “unethical, embarrassing, and unacceptable” conduct by certain Corps Mobilisation Officers (CMOs).

These officers, reportedly working in collusion with some departmental heads, are accused of demanding illegal fees from students seeking mobilisation for national service.

The memo firmly clarified that NYSC mobilisation is entirely free and should not attract any charges.

In response to the allegations, UNICAL has set up a Secret Investigation Team (SIT) to retrospectively probe the claims, ensure the return of any extorted funds, and identify those responsible. Any CMO or Head of Department found culpable will face disciplinary measures, with their names and misconduct formally reported to the university management.

The university is also urging students and staff to report any incidents of extortion directly to the Dean of Students, assuring them of complete confidentiality and protection.
