The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Nigeria and Media Awareness and Information for All Network (MAIN), have organised a training for journalists on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and developing a Network of Sustainable Development Journalists.
The training which took place in Abuja is part of accelerating solutions towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Agenda 2030 in Nigeria.
At the workshop National Information Officer UNIC, Seyi Soremekun, advised journalists to ensure that their reportage and features have depth.
“Journalists should rise above mere reporting of events. They need to invest time and energies in diving deeper into sustainability issues around an event,” he said.
Providing an insight into the training, the Chairman of MAIN, Prof. Lai Oso, emphasised that “sustainable development is a transformative initiative that meets the needs of today without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
The United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Co-Ordinator in Nigeria, Mr. Matthias Schmale said Nigeria has produced remarkable women in leadership position especially in private sector. He urged journalists to profile such successful women.
Schmale assured journalists that the United Nations is available and open to promoting events that will encourage empowering women.
