An unemployed man, Taiye Akindele, was on Thursday, docked in a Kubwa Magistrates’ Court in Abuja for alleged criminal trespass and assault.
The Police charged Akindele of Maroako with criminal trespass, and assault.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty.
The prosecution counsel, John Okpa told the court that the defendant entered a branch of the Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) on Gado Nasko Road, Kubwa under the pretense of transacting business on May 20.
Okpa alleged that the defendant, acting in a manner likely to cause hurt, attacked a GTB staff member, Clement Glory.
He said the offence contravened the provisions of Sections 348 and 265 of the Penal Code.
The defence counsel, Ms. Naomi Abang, pleaded with the court to grant the defendant bail.
Abang cited Section 158 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), and 36(5) of the 1999 constitution prayed the court to exercise its discretion in favour of the defendant.
Abang said that the defendant would not jump bail and will present a reliable surety.
Magistrate Oyepeju Mustapha admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
Mustapha said the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction, have a sustainable means of livelihood and their addresses must be verified by the court’s registrar.
She adjourned the case until June 8, for hearing. (NAN)
