There’s a dire need for government presence in the Uhunmwonde Local Government Area (LGA) of Edo State, Nigeria. Specifically, the lack of basic amenities like pipe-borne water and well-maintained roads in several clans around the Iyayi Efianayi road, also known as Egba road, is archetypal of the atmospherics and the nuances of the area.

About ten clans in the area lack access to government-provided amenities, forcing residents to buy 25 litres of water for ₦100 due to the absence of government-provided boreholes. Although some communities have taken matters into their own hands by sinking their own boreholes, these efforts are insufficient to meet the needs of all residents, as we are in the dry season and the raining season preparing to kick of in early months of 2025.

This article is calling on the Executive Chairman of Uhunmwonde LGA, Hon. Adodo Kenneth Osarobo and other elected office holders like the Member representing Ikooba-okha and Uhunmwonde federal constituency to provide basic amenities, highlighting the local government’s responsibility in this regard. While the local government has executed some projects, including road grading and rehabilitation of a few boreholes in few communities, there are more needs to be done.

The new governor, His Excellency Monday Okpebholo, has promised to develop the state’s infrastructure, which is a positive step. However, the article is urging the local government, state government, and federal representatives, Hon. Chief Billy Osawaru and even the Senator representing Edo South, Neda Imasuen, to work together to provide basic amenities to the affected communities.

Uhunmwonde LGA, with its headquarters in Ehor, has a population of 121,749 and covers an area of 2,033 km² ¹. The area has several markets, including the popular Egba market, and is known for lumbering, food processing, and animal rearing.

Overall, there is a need for government presence and intervention to provide basic amenities and improve the living conditions of people in Uhunmwonde LGA.
