The United Nations in Nigeria has noted with concern the devastation caused by recent flooding in 31 States of the federation leading to the deaths of more than 500 people.
According to Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, so far about one million people were displaced and some 40,000 homes had been submerged.
In a statement UNinNigeria extended condolences to families that lost loved ones, solidarity with all affected communities.
UNinNigeria also commended the Federal and State government agencies that are responding swiftly to save lives and livelihoods.
Forecasts indicate that more rains may be expected, which calls for redoubling of efforts to help those in need of urgent humanitarian assistance.
In Nigeria, as in other countries that have faced severe climate events in the recent past like Pakistan, the people are paying a heavy price for man-made climate change.
UNinNigeria added that urgent focus should now extend to building resilience through adaptation programmes for the communities that are exposed to these climate disasters.
