The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC); Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO); United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the World Maritime Organisation (WMO) are commemorating the 2022 World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, with the theme: “Rising up from drought together”.
The United Nations General Assembly by its resolution A/RES/49/115 of 1994, declared 17 June “World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought” to promote public awareness of efforts to combat desertification, and to remind everyone that land degradation neutrality was achievable through problem-solving, strong community involvement and co-operation at all levels.
According to release jointly signed by the National Information Officer, UN Information Centre (UNIC) Oluseyi Soremekun, FAO Communication Specialist Emmanuel Kihaule, UNDP Acting, Head of Communications, Alison Clement and WMO Communication Focal Person, Roland Abah, the theme of the 2022 World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought emphasised the need of an early action to avoid disastrous consequences for humanity and the planetary ecosystems.
UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Nigeria, Matthias Schmale, Country Representative, FAO, Mr Fred Kafeero, Country Representative, WMO, Mr Bernard Gomez, Director UNIC, Mr Ronald Kayanja, Dr Eugene Itua and Representative of the National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW) are expected to join the scheduled Zoom meeting to Commemorate the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought on Friday, 17 June 2022.
