UK Backs Nigeria’s Future Leaders with 68 Chevening, Commonwealth Scholarships

The United Kingdom Government has strengthened its investment in Nigeria’s human capital development by awarding prestigious Chevening and Commonwealth scholarships to 68 Nigerians for postgraduate studies in the UK.

The beneficiaries, selected through highly competitive processes, will undertake master’s and PhD programmes across a broad range of disciplines during the 2026 academic session, with pre-departure ceremonies held in Abuja and Lagos to honour the scholars.

Of the 68 Nigerians selected, 12 secured the Chevening Scholarship, while 56 have so far been awarded Commonwealth Scholarships.

Speaking at the pre-departure reception in Abuja, the Chargée d’Affaires of the British High Commission in Nigeria, Ms. Vicky Seymour, described the scholarship scheme as an investment not only in the individual beneficiaries but also in Nigeria’s future.

Seymour congratulated the scholars for emerging successfully from what she described as a highly competitive application and interview process, urging them to leverage their experience in the UK to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s development upon their return.

She said the scholars have bright futures ahead of them, stressing that their exposure to world-class education, professional networks and diverse experiences should ultimately translate into positive impact at home.

The British envoy expressed confidence that the beneficiaries would follow in the footsteps of previous Chevening and Commonwealth alumni who have made significant contributions to Nigeria’s development.

She urged the scholars to return to Nigeria equipped with new knowledge and experiences and use them to make a lasting contribution to the country.

Among the beneficiaries is Sarah Nathaniel Yanayork, a Chevening Scholar who will study International Human Rights Law at the University of Essex.

Yanayork described her selection as the culmination of a three-year journey of resilience and personal growth, saying the scholarship had given her an opportunity to deepen her commitment to human rights, good governance and inclusive development.

Another beneficiary, Abubakar Umar, who has a hearing impairment, will study Special Educational Needs at the University of Exeter under the Commonwealth Scholarship.

Umar said the award was particularly significant because of its emphasis on inclusion, describing the scholarship journey as a reflection of resilience and the possibility of building more inclusive systems.

The Chevening and Commonwealth scholarship programmes are designed to support individuals with demonstrated intellectual ability, leadership potential and a strong commitment to the development of their home countries.

The UK Government said Nigeria has built a substantial network of scholarship alumni, with more than 5,237 Nigerians having passed through the Chevening and Commonwealth programmes.

Many of the alumni have gone on to occupy influential positions and contribute to national development across various sectors, reinforcing the scholarships’ role as an avenue for building Nigeria’s next generation of leaders and professionals.

Meanwhile, applications for the 2027–2028 Chevening and Commonwealth scholarship programmes are already open, offering another opportunity for qualified Nigerians seeking advanced education and professional development in the United Kingdom.
